    Im 72. Trying to get self esteem. I want to have a homestead but family doesn't want it. I can't do it alone. I have written 2 books but just don't know how to get them on Amazon without paying someone. I'm strapped between checks. I just finished raising and dispatching 2 pigs and I'm scared to write about that too. I'd like some extra spending money. I'm not college educated. Just high school. Worked my whole life but helping family members puts a strain on things.

    Annie is wrong about winning a certain $100 against 50% winning 200 or winning nothing. If you play this 1000 times the winnings are a certain $100000. The second option may not be exactly 50% in practice. Maybe 52% and 48% either way. I will take the certain $100000 every time. In the losing scenario - certain $100 loss against losing 50% of $200 or 0 I will take the second option. In a 1000 times experiment again this doesn't have to lose 50/50. It all depends how many times you flip the coin. If it is once take the $100 gain or even take the $100 loss in case $200 loss comes up. In large number of coin flips will consider 50% chance of $200 loss as otherwise it is a certain loss of $100 every time. In once or a 1000 times I will take the $100 certain gain. Avoiding going bankrupt is the criteria here. A bird in hand is worth 10 in the bush. These Nobel Prize winners talk bullcrap sometimes.

    My biggest concern is retiring at a time with high inflation. With $500k in investment accounts, I'm afraid that my portfolio might not sustain a long retirement. My fund could deplete from expenses faster than it can recover with returns

      I'm almost ready to retire, and having a financial advisor has been incredibly beneficial. Since I started investing later in life, I couldn't rely solely on compound interest from index funds. I followed your advice and came her first. lol I already knew this would be interesting but I didn't know she was against FIRE. I get her point about something extreme could happen and a person/family might really be big trouble financial but that is not the norm. Most of the other items she mentions should kind of be known and somewhat accounted for like having risky investments, needed a new car or home improvements, sending kids to college. Even at 30 years old, those are obvious things to know and be saving/planning for. I thought it was funny how she said she had people at 50/55 years old come back at 70 years old like oh no I'm running out of money that was bad idea. Why did you let me do that? Suze said I didnt and denied you on my show. Well guess what, that show only ran 13 years or wikipedia has failed me. LOL

    My husband and I were fortunate enough to be able to pay off our mortgage early. We were both still working, and took the payment amount that we had been using to pay off our mortgage faster and we put it straight into investments. We were able to retire early because of almost 7 years of putting away what would have been our mortgage payment as well as maxing out our 401K/403B plans. Thankfully we were taught by both of our parents the value of living within our means. Thank you for your advice. I know it will help people. we are interested in investments that could set me up for retirement , I mean I've heard of people that netted hundreds of thousands during these crash, I listened to someone on a podcast who earned over $650K in less than a year, what's the strategy behind such returns?

      Even with the right strategies and appropriate assets, investment returns can differ among investors. Recognizing the vital role of experience in investment success is crucial. Personally, I understood this significance and sought guidance from a market analyst, significantly growing my account to nearly a million. Strategically withdrawing profits just before the market correction, I'm now seizing buying opportunities once again.

      I don't think she said not to invest in a 401K. You just need to know that there are conditions, like you can't tap into it until 59.5 without incurring penalties. There might be better options, especially if there is no match from your employer.

    I appreciate these tips and discussions. However, there is more than the mathematical aspect of debt to consider: e.g., stress, risks, and costs. As long as there is debt on a home or other asset, the lender controls it ultimately and can take it from you during a period of crisis. Debt-free homes, assets and investments have no risks or expenses related to debt and are yours to keep forever.

    If you wanna be successful, you most take responsibility for your emotions, not place the blame on others. In addition to make you feel more guilty about your faults, pointing the finger at others will only serve to increase your sense of personal accountability. There's always a risk in every investment, yet people still invest and succeed. You must look outward if you wanna be successful in life.

    One interesting variable to consider, however is the expected returns of one's holdings. If you can *grow* money, there is an advantage to getting it earlier, even if the figure in dollars is less. Warren Buffett may want to file early, for example, because those earlier flows are comparatively more valuable in his hands if that makes sense. May be a relevant consideration for much of the viewership here.

    That distinction on step 7 is really key and I think what people don't think about it. I would put that in step 8 as well I think. You can have your house paid off and whatever, smashing out 20% to retirement but its still good to make sure you have the emergency fund and cash for other things outside of that like a car or home repairs/remodels etc. Hard to really know or estimate but very crucial to planning for sure as you go.

    Hang on, we can't just be happy for someone else's success because we genuinely want to see them succeed? For example, I have a very good friend who has been a struggling actor for many years. Recently, he landed a big role and has been thriving both emotionally and financially. I have no desire to be an actor, I am just genuinely excited for his success.

    My partner just got a large inheritance from his mom. He put all of it in savings. Meanwhile, the rest of us, are in the negative in our bank accounts, we are drowning in debt and I have to skip meals just so our son can have something to eat or new clothes. He has a lot of money invested and saved, which is great and he should have, but we need food too. Our son needs new clothes, we have bills to pay. Meanwhile, I have to sell everything I own and empty out my savings to make sure we at least have a roof over our heads. I spent my inheritance on the down-payment on our home. He spent his "for future emergencies". That future just isn't today.

      @angelwings1979 21 день тому

      Umm…no offense but there’s zero reason that you should be responsible for all the bills especially if you share the living accommodations and are supporting a child that is also his. That’s not a “partner “. That’s someone you’re paying to be in a relationship with and are responsible for, while taking all the financial risks. Maybe I’m butting in where I’ve not been invited but it obviously bothers you if you posted it here. As an adult he should be completely capable of contributing to the household and his son. There obviously can be extenuating circumstances but at face value he’s not your partner, he’s a drain on your family. You need to take care of yourself so you can take care of your son. If going hungry because you don’t have enough money for food isn’t an emergency then what qualifies as one? He’s building his wealth off of your back.
